The February 2015 Loot Crate had a theme called “Play” and I was actually sort of nervous about whether I would like it or not. Since the theme photo had a family playing a board game I was a little concerned that this box wouldn’t be “gamer” enough for me.
Luckily, my fears were unfounded. While I was actually hoping for a little Dungeons and Dragons or WarMachine awesomeness there wasn’t any of that. It was kiiind of a box of toys. And I’m not averse to toys in the slightest.
The Cost: $13.37/month plus $6 shipping for a total of $19.37
What You Get: Awesome gamer/geek loot! Sometimes T-shirts (like this month!) Plenty of comment inducing collectibles to surround your computer desk with, all delivered right to your door. You don’t even have to go out to get it! Well, except to the mailbox.
Value: $8.99
MunnyWorld Creat Your Own Vinyl– So I think this is way too fun. You know what I’m going to paint this as? Zephie from Magna Carta 2. It’s going to be a little difficult since the shape is wrong but I think I might be able to make it recognizable. I wonder if I can add a skirt somehow… If you don’t know who Zephie is and you haven’t played Magna Carta 2 and you have a PS3, you NEED to get it. It’s a fantastic game. You know it’s good when the boss fights last 40 minutes.
Value: $9.99
So, the Loot Crate box this month is a gameboard and it came with two dice. I’m not sure that I care much about a game board since I’m not a tabletop game (nor do I play board games. I got old at some point, apparently). I have watched many, many games of WarMachine, though. Which is not a boardgame and is fun except when everyone is arguing about rules and whether you can or can’t charge in a forest and if you’re slowed, can you throw your spear as far as you could if you weren’t slowed. That’s the point when I go get another drink.
Anyhoo. Dice. The dice are Rock, Paper, Scissor dice. Which I’m not sure why you need dice to play Rock Paper Scissors unless you’re missing fingers.
Value? Negligible.
HexBug– Now we are talking. I like Hexbugs. Mainly because they make great toys for the dogs. They hate them and are fascinated by them at the same time. They will chase them for ages but never pick them up because they don’t like the wire antennae. haha!
Value: $8.99
Dangit, this box annoyed me. I have to admit it! They included a Loot Crate card game. Four types of cards. Pick one of each and then argue who would win. That isn’t a game! Plus, I was expecting photos on the cards. No photos. I wanted them to be pictures of the cosplayers they kept making hints about! Sadly, no. Ugh.
Pacman poster- Erm. I’m not sure what this actually is besides a piece of paper with a drawing on it and some Pacman references. Sheesh. I’m grumpy today or something, yeah? I put it up on the wall in Walker’s office because I didn’t know what else to do with it.
The Loot Crate magazine contained cardboard cutouts for using on their gameboard/box. It did have one interesting thing in it this month:
A history of game controllers. Wanna know what’s scary? I’ve used all of these except the Vectrex in 1982 and the 2001 GameCube Controller. My fondest memories are of the Atari joystick since those were my first computer games and the NES 1983 controller because Super Mario Bros was amazing and we used to have NES sleepovers and play Mario all day and all night.
VERDICT: Not my favorite Loot Crate but I can’t tell if it’s just because I’m grumpy or what. Because the book is legitimately good and the MunnyWorld Create is going to be fun. The Hexbug is already tormenting my dogs and those three things give me my money’s worth for the box. Maybe it’s that I don’t like the bits that are essentially useless to me. A silly board game. A stack of cards with no real purpose and a Firefly bonus content for a game that isn’t out yet.
Do you know what I would love to see in this box? Something from NOLF. You cannot say that No One Lives Forever wasn’t a good game. It was excellent and I appreciated being a female secret agent! No One Lives Forever 2 was good as well. After being a man in so many games, I remember being so happy that there was a game with a girl main character. Surprisingly, I’ve never played Tomb Raider that I recall which made NOLF stick out even more in my mind. It didn’t get Game of the Year for no reason.
One other thing I’d love to see? Archer. Yes, I know he’s not video game related but he’s a cartoon! I love Archer. That show is so horrifying it’s hilarious. I couldn’t help being dragged into loving it even while I can’t believe they’re saying such horrible things outloud.
